That result qualified the Japanese for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, where the Utsumi’s team played well at times but failed to progress beyond the preliminary round. As a player, Utsumi was a big hit. He turned out for elite teams such as Noshiro HS, Nippon Sport Science University and Nihon Kogyo (current JOMO), and was known for his ability to knock down shots from long range, a skill that helped him earn him a place in the men’s National Team for a FIBA Asia Championship. Since 2001, he has served as the coach of JOMO, a club he’s led to four league titles. Utsumi is well known for his ability to make excellent adjustments during games.
