Zabala is an emotional figure on the Cuban bench which was obvious at the 2008 Beijing Basketball Test Event. 
His booming voice is often heard from the stands as he shouts orders to his players throughout games. No coach slaps as many high-fives with his charges as Zabala. Is Zabala a winner? When it really mattered last year, the former youth team coach led the Cuban women to an upset of Brazil in a semi-final at the FIBA Americas Championship to reach the title game against the United States. Making it to the gold medal game was a huge boost for the Cuban game. It helps Zabala that he is able to work with his National Team players for virtually the entire year. He believes the preparation for the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament has been more than adequate after a home series of friendlies against Brazil and the event in Beijing.
