After nearly 20 years spent as a professional player in Portugal, Maria Afonso came back home and naturally joined Primero de Agosto. A good thing to grab another National League title, which she has done last march. At 40 years old, she will play her second Olympic Qualifying Tournament, 20 years after the first one she played, in 1988, in Singapore. She is no more a dominant center, but she now plays more as a power forward capable to drive despite her age. In Spain, she could be playing her last international competition.
